For more than a decade, Liu Cixin wrote science fiction the way most people do a side hustle. Days went to his job as a computer engineer at the Niangziguan Power Plant in Shanxi Province. Evenings and weekends went to the fiction. The novels he was building in those leftover hours involved the complete annihilation of the solar system, civilizations spanning hundreds of millions of years, and a mathematical conjecture so destabilizing it functions as the trilogy's central moral dilemma. The ambitions were galactic. The time available was not.
Liu (family name Liu, given name Cixin, pronounced roughly "lee-oh tsuh-shin") is the first Asian author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel, which he received in 2015 for The Three-Body Problem, translated into English by Ken Liu. The trilogy, known in English as the Remembrance of Earth's Past series, spans three volumes and covers the largest narrative canvas in contemporary science fiction. All of it was written in the margins of an engineering career, in a provincial city few readers outside China had heard of, across years when Liu had no particular reason to believe anyone outside a small readership would ever care. There's something in that story worth sitting with, especially if you're a writer who tells yourself the conditions aren't quite right yet.

Liu began publishing short fiction in Science Fiction World, China's premier science fiction magazine, in 1989. He kept his day job. For the better part of two decades, that was the arrangement: engineer by day, novelist by night and weekend, operating in a genre that had a passionate readership in China but remained largely invisible to the Western literary world. The situation wasn't unusual for Chinese SF writers of his generation. The infrastructure for a full-time science fiction career simply didn't exist in the same way it did in the United States or the UK. You wrote because you had to write, and you found the time where you could.
What's striking, looking back at this period, is how little the constrained circumstances seem to have shrunk his imagination. If anything, the scale went the other direction. While writing in the evenings after engineering shifts, Liu was constructing a fictional universe that begins with first contact in 1960s China during the Cultural Revolution and ends with the heat death of the cosmos. The ambition belongs to someone who'd spent years thinking about one set of questions and finally had enough material to build something worthy of them.
He has spoken in interviews about the influence of his engineering background on the fiction. The power plant at Niangziguan sits against a dramatic landscape in Shanxi, and Liu has described looking at the machinery around him and seeing both the smallness of human engineering and its strange audacity, the way people build enormous complicated systems to extract and convert energy from the planet. That tension, between cosmic scale and human fragility, runs through the trilogy at every level. The engineer who spent his days maintaining industrial infrastructure wrote novels about civilizations that treat entire stars as weapons. The connection isn't incidental.
The Imagination of an Engineer
Hard science fiction demands a particular kind of attention. You can't handwave the physics. If your plot turns on the behavior of a three-body gravitational system, you need to understand what that behavior actually is, and then you need to find a way to make it dramatically meaningful to a reader who may not have thought about orbital mechanics since high school. This is the specific challenge Liu solved, repeatedly, across three very long novels, and his engineering training is almost certainly why he could do it.
His fiction is built around ideas rather than character psychology in the way that most Western literary fiction is built. That's sometimes cited as a criticism, but it's more accurately a description of a different tradition. The questions his books pursue, whether civilizations in the universe must inevitably destroy each other, what it would mean for a single human to carry the fate of the species, how human consciousness might persist across geological time, are genuinely large questions, and they require a mind comfortable with large abstractions. An engineer who has spent years thinking about systems, constraints, and second-order consequences has exactly that kind of mind.
Ken Liu, the translator who brought the first and third volumes to English-language readers, has written about the challenge of carrying Liu Cixin's particular voice across languages. In his translator's note to The Three-Body Problem, he describes Liu's prose as operating on a scale where individual human characters sometimes feel like variables in an equation, and argues that this is intentional rather than a limitation. It's a cosmological perspective, one that insists the universe doesn't arrange itself around human concerns. That perspective is native to Liu's engineering worldview, and it's what makes the trilogy feel like nothing else in contemporary science fiction writing.
